Healthy Food on a Budget

I don’t know anyone who isn’t trying to eat healthier, and many find the most difficult part is not spending a fortune or a large amount of time.  The unfortunate fact is that unhealthy food is cheap, easily accessible, and needs little to no preparation.   Healthy food to fit a budget is harder to come by.  Drive-thrus and vending machines are not going away so it’s up to each of us to find a better way.

I understand the hassle of trying to find healthy food all too well.  I’m a vegan with a family who has celiac disease (no gluten) and lives in New England in a semi-rural area.  While the local farm stands and green markets are great, they are only open part of the year and offer limited varieties.  Finding healthy food is even more difficult due to the lack of stores with good options in my area.  Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are great, but they are pricey, crowded, and getting to them is always a challenge.

Enter online shopping!  Luckily, there is some healthy food on a budget out there if you know where to look.  Here are some of my favorites:

Budget-Friendly Healthy Food at ThriveMarket

ThriveMarket saves money by eliminating retail markup costs resulting in a 25-50% discount.  It is a membership-driven business, and to me, well worth the annual $60 fee.  They are so certain that you will see savings that they guarantee your annual fee back if you don’t experience it.  For example, if you only saved $40 that year, they will add $20 in credit for the next year.  How cool is that?  They also offer a free 30-day trial if you just want to try it out.

Now for the good stuff: ThriveMarket is well-organized so you can sort through vegan, gluten-free, paleo, raw and many more categories.  You can look for nut-free, soy-free, sugar-free, salt-free, preservative-free, etc.  They even sort by environmental and social values including BPA-free, turtle and dolphin-safe, etc.  Click here to get 25% off your first order!

Budget-Friendly Healthy Food at Vitacost

Vitacost is known for their vitamins and supplements, but they also offer some good organic and other health-based foods at a wholesale price.  Many of the their items are 50% off retail.  They further decrease their prices by offering another 10% off automatic delivery items – great for things like vitamins or pet food.  There is a handy feature called “Promo Pocket,” which lists all of the current promo codes that can be used for this site.

Budget-Friendly Healthy Food at Nuts.Com

Nuts.com is my go-to place for certified gluten-free nuts.  Believe it or not, they are hard to find and the entire family relies on this site.  They ship lightning fast with free 1-day shipping for orders of $59 or more.

With flu season in full swing, avoid the crowds (and germs) and check out my blog on grocery delivery options including Peapod, Instacart, Walmart Grocery, and Boxed Wholesale.
